Swimming, Hiking & History at Indian Key State Park

Set off for an adventure on this 10-acre island just off the coast of the Florida Keys. Accessible only by boat or chartered tour, this park is a quiet place to explore the nature trails, wander amid ancient Indian history, or just sunbathe along the tranquil beaches. History buffs will enjoy learning about the island's colorful past as a shipwreck salvage depot. It takes about 25 minutes to paddle to the island, and you can rent a kayak from Robbie's Marina.

  • Do they offer tour for the historic sites?

There are no official ranger tours, but you can call 305-395-9889 to learn about a Florida historian that does custom tours for $13. It's also easy to enjoy a self-guided walk, because there are several helpful plaques and historic markers dotted around the park to give you a rundown of the local lore.
  • Do they allow pets?

Don't plan on bringing your furry friend, because dogs are not allowed on the island. The island is a pet-free zone. Also note that, although there is a dock for your boat, there are few facilities in the park including no restrooms or picnic areas.
