Nature, Walking Tours & Boating at Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park

Experience the original tropical feel of the Florida Keys on this very special island. Only accessible by boat, this secluded nature preserve is home to the area's last virgin forest of rare hardwood trees. Ranger guided tours take you along a lush path through the vegetation. The visitors center is based in a historic house from 1919 that captures life in simpler times. To get to the park, you can take a private boat or book a charter from nearby marinas.

FAQs

  • Do they offer kayaking?

The park does not rent boats, but Robbie's Marina just across the bay offers a variety of kayaks. You can rent one yourself and paddle out to the island. It's only about a third of a mile away. An alternative is to take a guided kayak tour from Robbie's that offers an in-depth look at the park.
  • What kind of trees can I expect to see there?

The island offers a lush landscape filled with rare forests and plants. During the walking tour led by an on-site ranger, you will encounter hundreds of tropical species along the nature path. The highlight is the Rockland Hammock trails lined with Gumbo Limbo Trees and other unique hardwoods.
